Buy AA Miles – up to 60% bonus

As I previously mentioned back in First Class (HK to Rome) – Cheaper with AAdvantage miles, the deal back then was a 10% discount of the purchase price and then up to 35,000 miles bonus. Back then, the ballpark purchase price per mile was about 0.155HKD per mile.

That deal finished on November 13, and this months deal turns out to be even better, with their website claiming that is it the “Best deal for 2015”

Till November 30, 2015, you can now buy miles and get up to 60% bonus (or maximum of 75,000 miles bonus) – that equates to about 3,687 USD for 200,000 miles, or 0.142HKD per mile. Which to be honest, is quite a great deal if you can plan your travels ahead of time and book award tickets.

With this deal, you’ll be looking at spending around 25k HKD for first class return flight from Hong Kong to Rome (140k miles equates to about 2,580 USD and plus the 678 USD tax) which saves you an additional 2k HKD from the previous November deal (not much but a saving is a saving!)

So should you take this deal? My opinion is that if you do plan to travel somewhere next year and you can take/book leave quite a bit earlier and with a bit of flexibility, it is probably worth booking it. That said, if you do plan to book, I would suggest you take up the offer and lock in your flights soon as AA has been going through a lot of changes with their frequent flyer programs lately which could eventually end with awards devaluation – especially with other OneWorld partners reducing the miles earned when flying with different airlines (Cathay reduces miles earned with other OneWorld carriers)

Cathay is one of many OneWorld carriers reducing miles earned when flying other airlines.

Also, do note that if you do want to take advantage of buying the miles, you will need an AAdvantage account that is more than 30 days old, if you haven’t signed up, it is worth the 10 mins and it is free (you can do it through their enrolment site).
